Is Neocities free? Limits, file types, and commercial use (2026)
Quick answer
Yes. Neocities' supporter page gives free sites “1 GB” of storage, “200 GB” of bandwidth, and “No advertising, ever,” and its terms, last updated September 5, 2014, forbid no business use. Custom domains, more than 1 site, and “No File Upload Type Restrictions” need Supporter, at $5 a month.
Free plan: no credit card, 1 published page, 50 form entries a month shown.

Yes. Neocities' supporter page gives the Free plan “1 GB” of storage and “200 GB” of bandwidth, with “No advertising, ever,” and Neocities' terms, whose last update “was posted on September 5, 2014,” forbid no business site. Custom domains, more than 1 site, and “No File Upload Type Restrictions” sit in the Supporter column only, at $5 a month. One rule changed the day before this page was written: Neocities' changelog entry of October 31, 2026 gives free sites “a more relaxed Content Security Policy,” so a free site's scripts can now call other servers, which third-party analytics and many widgets need.
The page covers what Free includes, what happens past the bandwidth, which files Free accepts, custom domains, and commercial use case by case, then puts Neocities next to 4 other free hosts.
Neocities' supporter page, file-type rules, changelog, terms, about page, and the plan settings in its published source code were read on November 1, 2026, between 15:08 and 15:11 JST, and the archived site policy at 15:55 JST. The supporter page carries no date of its own; where a page has one, it's given with the quote. Prices are in US dollars.
Neocities Free vs Supporter
| Neocities Free | Neocities Supporter | Source | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | $5 a month | Supporter page |
| Storage | 1 GB | 50 GB | Supporter page |
| Bandwidth a month | 200 GB, a soft limit | 3,000 GB, a soft limit | Supporter page, the bandwidth row's note |
| Sites on one account | 1 | Up to 30 | Supporter page: “Make up to 30 sites with one account”; source code |
| Files in one site | 15,000 | 100,000 | Source code: maximum_site_files |
| Largest file | 100 MB | 100 MB | Source code: MAX_FILE_SIZE |
| File types | The allowed list only | Any: “static hosting only, no copyrighted/illegal content” | Allowed file types, Supporter page |
| Address | yoursitename.neocities.org, with SSL | The same, plus your own domain with SSL | Supporter page |
| Ads on your site | None | None | Supporter page, about page |
| Site stats history | 30 days | Longer; Neocities doesn't say how long | Supporter page: “Free sites are limited to 30 days.” |
| Other sites loading your files (hotlinking, CORS) | No | Yes | Supporter page |
| Fetch and XHR calls to other servers (what analytics and many widgets need) | Yes, since October 31, 2026; before, to the site itself and nowhere else | Yes | Changelog, supporter page |
| Scripts, images, and embeds loaded from other hosts | Yes, before and after October 31, 2026 | Yes | The Internet Archive's copy of a free site's policy, in the section on JavaScript below |
| Ways to upload | Drag and drop, the in-browser editor, the command line tool | The same, plus WebDAV and SFTP (in beta) | Supporter page, changelog of October 2, 2026 |
| Email support | No | “Basic Email Support” | Supporter page |
The supporter page names no file count or file size. Neocities' published source code does: maximum_site_files: 15_000 for Free and 100_000 for Supporter, and MAX_FILE_SIZE = 10**8 # 100 MB for every plan. Creating a second site on Free returns “Cannot create a new site with your current plan, please become a supporter.”
What happens past 200 GB of bandwidth on Neocities
Nothing happens at first. The note on the supporter page's bandwidth row says “Don't worry—these are soft limits. Temporary surges are fine, we won't take your site down automatically, and we're very flexible.” Neocities doesn't say what happens to a site that stays over 200 GB month after month, and its terms let it “terminate the agreement at any time for any reason for no reason.”
Storage is a hard limit. Neocities' source code refuses an upload when the file is over 100 MB or would take the site past its storage, 1 GB on Free.
Which file types Neocities Free accepts
Free takes only the file types on Neocities' allowed list. Its first lines name what a static site is made of: HTML (.html, .htm), images (.jpg, .png, .gif, .svg, .ico), Markdown (.md, .markdown), JavaScript (.js, .json, .geojson), CSS, text (.txt, .text, .csv, .tsv), XML, and web fonts (.eot, .ttf, .woff, .woff2, .svg). The full list adds formats such as .avif, .webp, .pdf, .epub, .mid, .glb, .gltf, .obj, .ts, .yaml, and .webmanifest.
The list has no audio (.mp3, .wav, .ogg), no video (.mp4, .webm), no archives (.zip), no programs (.exe), and no WebAssembly (.wasm). A browser game with .mp3 sound effects, or a Godot or Unity web export with a .wasm file, won't upload to a free Neocities site.
Neocities gives its reasons on the same page:
- No “file dump host.” Neocities says it needs “measures to prevent Neocities from becoming a "file dump host".” Executables are out because they give attackers “a way to host malicious content.”
- Audio and video cost bandwidth. “MP3 music and MP4 video has similar problems, because if the uploaded content became very popular ("goes viral"), it would overwhelm our servers and make our bandwidth much more costly.” Neocities points to SoundCloud and YouTube for music and video.
- Supporter lifts the list. “If you become a supporter, we will remove the whitelist for your file uploads, and you can upload anything you want (except illegal/copyrighted content, of course)!”
The same page adds that Neocities has “measures in place to prevent hotlinking of content from non-Neocities sites,” so an image on a free site won't load when another website embeds it. Hotlinking support is a Supporter feature.
JavaScript and calls to other servers on a free Neocities site
Yes. JavaScript always ran on free Neocities sites; since October 31, 2026 it can also call other servers. Neocities' changelog entry “Relaxed CSP for free sites” says “Starting today, free sites have a more relaxed Content Security Policy, allowing widgets, third-party analytics, etc.” Its reason: “We now have a full-time moderation and support team to deal with this instead, so we don't need this restriction anymore.”
What changed is the part the supporter page still lists as a Supporter feature: “Less Strict Content Security Policy,” which “Allows connect-src and AJAX to other servers for programming.” Before October 31, scripts, images, styles, and embeds from other hosts already loaded on free sites. What stayed limited to the site itself were fetch and XHR calls, and forms, which could post nowhere else. Now a free site's scripts can call other servers, which third-party analytics and many widgets need, and a form can post to an outside form service such as Formspree. The supporter page's table hasn't caught up, and the changelog is the newer of the 2.
The Internet Archive's copy of a site without the Supporter badge, saved on October 15, 2026, keeps the old policy: script-src * 'unsafe-inline' 'unsafe-eval', with connect-src 'self' data: blob: and form-action 'self'. On November 1, 2026, the same site sent default-src 'unsafe-inline' 'unsafe-eval' 'self' data: blob: *, which no longer holds calls or form posts to the site itself.
Anything written before October 31, 2026 that says free Neocities sites' scripts can't call other servers (fetch, AJAX) is out of date.
Custom domains on Neocities
No, not on Free. Neocities' supporter page puts “Custom Domains” and “Custom Domain SSL Certs” in the Supporter column, and its source code sets custom_domains: false for Free. A free site lives at yoursitename.neocities.org, with “Free SSL encryption for your subdomain.” Neocities' terms add that “the right to use that subdomain address will belong only to Neocities.”
Supporter, at $5 a month, lets you “Add your domain name (yoursite.com) to your site!” You bring a domain you already own.
Can you use Neocities for commercial use?
Yes. Neocities' Terms of Service, last updated September 5, 2014, forbid no kind of business use, and their “Commerce on the Web” section says sales of “merchandise or services offered by you through the Neocities service” are “agreed to solely between you and third party purchasers.” The Acceptable Use Policy in the same document states its goal as letting you use the service “to enrich your business and recreational life.”
What the terms rule out is a set of practices, not commerce: sites made only for search rankings, spam, fraud, collecting personal data without consent, and sites a service generates for other people through the API. Neocities' about page describes the service as “a free place to create a personal, static HTML web site,” and the terms let Neocities end an account “at any time for any reason for no reason.”
| Case | Ruling | What Neocities' terms and pages say |
|---|---|---|
| A site for your own business, shop, or services | Yes | The policy's goal: “to enrich your business and recreational life” (terms) |
| Selling products or services, with checkout on another service | Yes | “all transactions relating to merchandise or services offered by you through the Neocities service … are agreed to solely between you and third party purchasers” (terms, “Commerce on the Web”) |
| A portfolio that brings you paid work | Yes | The same “Commerce on the Web” section covers “services offered by you” (terms) |
| Ads you place on your own site | Neocities doesn't say | The terms don't mention a site owner's ads; Neocities puts none of its own: “We will never put ads on your site” (supporter page) |
| Affiliate links | Neocities doesn't say | No clause names them (terms) |
| A site you build and host for a client | Neocities doesn't say | No clause names client work; the client's own domain needs Supporter (supporter page) |
| Sites your service generates for other people through the API | No, without Neocities' consent | “Using the Neocities API to generate a Neocities site for other people from a different web service is prohibited without our consent” (terms) |
| A site made only for search rankings or backlinks | No | “Client shall not upload web sites intended for use solely for Search Engine Optimization” (terms) |
| Unsolicited promotional email or posts | No | Spam includes “unauthorized or unsolicited advertising, junk or bulk e-mail, solicitations, promotional materials” (terms) |
| Selling downloads such as .zip, .mp3, or video files | No on Free; yes on Supporter | Free takes the allowed list only; Supporter: “You can upload anything you like (static hosting only, no copyrighted/illegal content)” (supporter page) |
Neocities and 4 other free hosts on the same facts
| Host (free plan) | Size limits | Traffic a month | Custom domain | Badge or ads on your page | Commercial use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neocities Free | 1 GB; up to 15,000 files of up to 100 MB each; listed file types only | 200 GB, a soft limit | No; Supporter, $5 a month | None | Yes; the terms treat your sales as between you and your buyers |
| GitHub Pages | A published site up to 1 GB; on GitHub Free the repository must be public | Soft limit of 100 GB | Yes, a subdomain or an apex domain | GitHub's Pages docs don't say | Not for “your online business, e-commerce site,” or SaaS |
| Cloudflare Pages | Up to 20,000 files of up to 25 MiB each | “Requests to static assets are free and unlimited” | Yes, up to 100 per project | Cloudflare's Pages docs don't say | No personal-use limit, but no collecting “credit card information” on a free property |
| Netlify Free | Netlify's pricing page doesn't say | 300 credits for deploys and traffic: 15 per production deploy, 20 per GB | Yes, with SSL | “Powered by Netlify” on new Free projects since August 19, 2026; you can turn it off | Yes: “you can deploy commercial projects” |
| Convika Free | 1 .html file up to 2 MB per page; 1 published page | 10,000 page views, then the pages stop 7 days later until the month ends or you upgrade | 1 subdomain, such as www | A small Convika bar; Pro, at $12 a month, removes it | Yes, section 7 of the terms |
Each cell comes from the host's own page, read on November 1, 2026 and listed under Sources below.
The GitHub Pages and Netlify rules are covered in Can you use GitHub Pages for a commercial site? and Is Netlify free?, and Cloudflare's in Is Cloudflare Pages free for commercial use?. Free HTML hosting compared adds 6 more hosts.
The same page on Convika
Convika hosts landing pages, one HTML page each, and keeps what happens on them. For a single page made with ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, 5 things differ from a free Neocities site.
- The form keeps the entries. Click Add a form to my page, and Convika adds a form that stores each entry, emails it to you, and exports to CSV. Free shows 50 entries a month, and later ones are kept for Pro. Neocities hosts files only, so a form there needs an outside service.
- 90 days of visitor stats. You get visits, referrers, UTM campaigns, devices, countries, and button clicks.
- Your own subdomain on Free. The page can go on 1 custom subdomain, such as
www.yourbrand.com, with the SSL certificate issued for you. - Commercial use is written into the terms. Section 7 of the terms allows it on every plan, Free included, including a client's page you build, host, and bill for.
- Page views, not bandwidth. Free includes 10,000 page views a month. Once your pages reach 10,000 in a month, editing and analytics pause, and 7 days later the pages stop until the month ends or you upgrade; Convika emails you at 80% first. This applies from sign-up to a workspace created on or after October 23, 2026 (Japan time), and from November 1, 2026 to one created before then.
Upload the .html file in the dashboard, up to 2 MB, or paste its code. Click Publish page, choose Public, then Next; the first time, click Publish free. Free includes 1 published page, with a small Convika bar at the bottom. Pro removes the bar and costs $12 a month.
Where Neocities fits better: a site of several pages you build and edit by hand, with its own images, fonts, and files, no bar, and a community that browses and follows sites. Convika hosts each page as one HTML file at its own path, and images go in by full https:// link. A Convika page's scripts and libraries from an https:// CDN run on every plan. On Free, a script's fetch and XHR requests reach only the page's own address; on Pro and MAX, they also reach the analytics tools Convika supports and up to 20 hosts you list for your own ad network in the page's settings. A page that pulls data from another server runs on Neocities Free since October 31, 2026, and not on Convika Free.
Drop the .html file right below or paste its code to see your page on Convika before signing up. You get a private preview link that works for 3 minutes, with the page's scripts and forms off until you keep it with a free account. The same box is on the free HTML publishing tool.
Which one to pick
- A personal site of several pages that you make by hand, learn HTML on, and keep free of any bar: Neocities Free.
- The same site on your own domain, or with audio, video, or .zip files: Neocities Supporter, at $5 a month.
- One page from ChatGPT or Claude that collects signups on your own subdomain, with visitor stats: Convika's Free plan.
- A site you keep in a Git repository: GitHub Pages, within its rules on commercial use.
- Static files that may get heavy traffic: Cloudflare Pages, with no cap on static requests.
- A Glitch project that needs a new home: Glitch alternatives sorts the options by static project and Node.js server.
Frequently asked questions
Is Neocities free?
Yes, Neocities is free. A free account gets 1 site at yoursitename.neocities.org with 1 GB of storage, 200 GB of bandwidth a month, SSL, the in-browser editor, and no ads. Custom domains, up to 30 sites, any file type, and email support come with Supporter, at $5 a month.
Is Neocities free forever?
Yes, Neocities says its free plan stays. Its about page says “Neocities will always offer a free way to make and host a website,” and no page puts a time limit on a free site. Neocities' terms still let it end an account “at any time for any reason for no reason.”
What's the difference between Neocities free and paid?
Neocities Supporter, the paid plan at $5 a month, raises storage from 1 GB to 50 GB and bandwidth from 200 GB to 3,000 GB a month. It adds custom domains, up to 30 sites, any file type, longer stats history than Free's 30 days, hotlinking, CORS, WebDAV, SFTP, and email support. Calls from a site's scripts to other servers used to be a Supporter feature too; since October 31, 2026, they work on both plans.
How much storage do you get on Neocities for free?
Neocities Free gives 1 GB of storage per site. Its source code also caps a free site at 15,000 files and any single file at 100 MB. Supporter raises storage to 50 GB and the file count to 100,000.
What happens if my Neocities site goes over the bandwidth limit?
Nothing happens at first, because Neocities won't take the site down. Its supporter page calls 200 GB a month a soft limit: “Temporary surges are fine, we won't take your site down automatically, and we're very flexible.” Neocities doesn't say what happens to a site that stays over the limit.
Can I use a custom domain on Neocities for free?
No, custom domains are a Neocities Supporter feature, at $5 a month. A free site lives at yoursitename.neocities.org with SSL. Supporter adds your own domain with an SSL certificate.
Can I use Neocities for commercial use?
Yes, Neocities' terms forbid no business use. Their “Commerce on the Web” section says sales of “merchandise or services offered by you through the Neocities service” are between you and your buyers. The terms forbid sites made only for search rankings, spam, fraud, and generating sites for other people through the API without Neocities' consent.
Why can't I upload MP3 or MP4 files to Neocities?
Neocities Free takes only the file types on its allowed list, and audio and video aren't on it. The list has no .mp3, .wav, .ogg, .mp4, or .webm, and no .zip or .wasm either, because popular media files “would overwhelm our servers and make our bandwidth much more costly.” Supporter removes the list for static files.
Can I use JavaScript on Neocities' free plan?
Yes, JavaScript has always run on free Neocities sites, including scripts loaded from other hosts. Since October 31, 2026, those scripts can also call other servers with fetch or XHR, which third-party analytics and many widgets need. Neocities' changelog says free sites now have “a more relaxed Content Security Policy, allowing widgets, third-party analytics, etc.” Before that date, calls to other servers needed Supporter.
Does Neocities put ads on my site?
No, Neocities puts no ads on free or Supporter sites. Its supporter page says “We will never put ads on your site, or give your data to marketers,” and its about page says “We do not put ads or watermarks on your site.” Neocities is funded by Supporter plans and donations.
